The Czech Paradise (Český ráj)
The Český ráj (Bohemian Paradise) region lies just a short drive – about 70 km northeast of Prague.
Officially, the protected landscape area extends from Mnichovo Hradiště in the west to Jičín in the east, with Turnov often considered the region’s cultural “capital.” The broader surrounding area, however, is equally rich in natural beauty and places to explore.
The landscape has been remarkably well preserved, offering a harmonious mix of forests, meadows, agricultural fields, and the region’s iconic sandstone formations. Small, picturesque towns dot the area, many of which have remained virtually unchanged for generations.
A true highlight of Český ráj is its famous “Rock Cities” (Skalní města)—towering sandstone pillars rising dramatically from the earth. These formations attract rock-climbing enthusiasts from near and far, often seen scaling the cliffs like tiny ants.
The region also features countless hiking trails, historical landmarks, medieval castles perched on rocky outcrops, and charming traditional homes. The Rock Cities offer a peaceful, family-friendly environment, and on hot summer days, the cool shade of the sandstone walls provides a welcome retreat.
Many travelers discover that the Czech Republic’s most enchanting treasures are found outside the capital. While Prague is certainly worth a visit, the true magic of the country often reveals itself when you venture deeper into regions like Český ráj.

First Point - “Prachov Cliffs” (Prachovské skály)

The Prachov Cliffs (Prachovské skály) have been a beloved destination for centuries.
On the evening of June 3, 1813, Emperor Franz I arrived in Jičín and took residence at Jičín Castle. The following day, he began intensive diplomatic negotiations with Russia and Prussia. During his month-long stay, the emperor explored the surrounding region, including a memorable visit to the Prachov Cliffs on June 9.
While walking among the dramatic rock formations, he passed through a narrow gorge that later became known as the “Imperial Corridor,” a name that still honors his visit today.
In 1879, the Prachov Cliffs welcomed a distinguished group of visitors: Prague businessman Vojta Náprstek, his wife, and the Club of American Ladies. Despite their name, these women were not American—they were progressive, energetic, and forward-thinking Czech women inspired by American ideals of modernity and independence. They were accompanied by the renowned poet Jaroslav Vrchlický. The group traveled to the rock town by wagon and continued their exploration on foot, inspiring enthusiastic articles in the newspapers of the time.
A branch of the Club of Czech Tourists was established in Jičín in 1892, significantly boosting tourism in the region. By 1912, the club had purchased a hotel in Horní Lochov, which soon became a beloved summertime base for visitors to the Prachov Cliffs. The club also played a key role in developing the area’s early tourist routes.
After the dissolution of Austria-Hungary and the birth of Czechoslovakia, the club’s director oversaw the construction of new stairs and pathways through the cliffs. This work was carried out in 1922 by soldiers of the 22nd Engineer Regiment stationed in Jičín as part of their training. Their legacy remains etched into the sandstone—quite literally: the regiment’s insignia and the year 1922 are still carved into the rocks today.
Second point - Scenic views
After completing the trail, we’ll continue along scenic country roads, passing through charming villages and picturesque landscapes on our way to the iconic Trosky Castle.
Along the route, we’ll stop at a peaceful lake where elegant white swans often glide across the water. From there, we’ll continue to Hrubá Skála Castle, where we’ll visit its lookout and tower to enjoy breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding countryside.
Third Point - Hrubá Skála and through the Mouse Hole
Next, we’ll make a short descent through the narrow “Mouse Hole” passage into the picturesque Hrubá Skála Gorge. After completing this part of the trail, we’ll continue to the town of Turnov, where we’ll explore the region’s history, including the period of Nazi occupation.
In Turnov, we’ll visit the main square, walk through the historic Jewish quarter, and tour the beautifully restored synagogue—before enjoying a well-deserved lunch.
Fourth Point - Kost Castle and the preserved village
To conclude our adventure, we’ll begin the journey back to Prague, stopping along the way to admire the majestic Kost Castle and explore a charming, well-preserved village, soaking in the beauty and history of the region before returning to the city.
