The Czech Paradise (Český ráj)
Just a short drive—about 70 km northeast—lies the spectacular nature reserve poetically known as “The Bohemian Paradise” (Český ráj). This reserve stretches between the towns of Mladá Boleslav, Jičín, Nová Paka, and Semily.
Officially, “Český ráj” refers to the reserve in the heart of the region, extending from Mnichovo Hradiště in the west to Jičín in the east, with Turnov serving as the area’s capital. However, the surrounding regions are also filled with wonderful places to explore.
The stunning scenery here has been remarkably well-preserved, offering a diverse landscape of lush plains, agricultural fields, and the region’s unique rock formations. Small, picturesque towns scattered throughout the area have remained largely unchanged for generations.
A key highlight of the reserve is the “Rock Cities” (Skalní města) – massive sandstone pillars that seem to grow from the ground. These formations attract rock-climbing enthusiasts, who can often be seen scaling the pillars like tiny ants.
In addition to these rock formations, the reserve boasts numerous hiking trails, historical sites, towering castles perched on cliffs, and charming, authentic rural homes. The Rock Cities are perfect for those seeking a peaceful, serene environment and are especially suited for family hikes. On hot summer days, the towering rocks provide a cool retreat.
Many visitors have discovered the hidden gems of the Czech Republic, spending little to no time in Prague and dedicating the rest of their trip to exploring magical destinations. The true beauty of the Czech Republic unfolds when you venture beyond Prague.

Other tour options will be described below.
We will pick you up from your hotel and after about one hour we will arrive at our first stop.
1st Point - “Prachov Cliffs” (Prachovské skály)

The Prachov Cliffs (Prachovské skály) have long been a cherished destination.
On the evening of June 3, 1813, Emperor Franz I arrived in Jičín and took residence at Jičín Castle. The following day, he commenced intensive diplomatic negotiations with Russia and Prussia. During his month-long stay, the emperor embarked on several excursions in the Jičín area, including a visit to the Prachov Cliffs on June 9. While exploring these stunning rock formations, he traversed a gorge that is still known today as the ‘Imperial Corridor’ in his honor.
In 1879, the Prachov Cliffs welcomed a visit from Prague businessman Vojta Náprstek, his wife, and the Club of American Ladies. Despite the name, these ‘American ladies’ were not from America but were a group of modern, energetic, and emancipated women who embraced the American way of life. Accompanying them was the renowned poet Jaroslav Vrchlický. The group traveled to the rock town by wagon and then explored the area on foot. Their visit inspired enthusiastic articles in the contemporary press.
Since 1892, a branch of the Club of Czech Tourists has been active in Jičín. The club played a pivotal role in promoting tourism in the region. By 1912, they had purchased a hotel in Horní Lochov, which became a hub for summer visitors to the Prachov Cliffs. The club also developed the area’s modern tourist routes.
Following the dissolution of Austria-Hungary and the formation of Czechoslovakia, the Czech Tourist Club’s director initiated the construction of stairs and pathways through the cliffs. This work, carried out by soldiers from the 22nd Engineer Regiment stationed in Jičín as part of their training, left a lasting mark. The regiment’s insignia and the year ‘1922’ remain carved into the rocks as a tribute to their efforts.
